Chimney inspections
The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)
Recommends an annual inspection of all residential chimney and venting systems to ensure their safety and proper functioning. This inspection is a visual examination to detect issues like creosote buildup, cracks, obstructions, and damage, which are then addressed through cleaning or repairs as needed. More in-depth inspections (Level 2 or 3) are necessary for properties being sold, after a chimney fire, or when structural damage is suspected. A trained professional performs a visual inspection of the chimney's interior and exterior to check for basic soundness and the presence of combustible material. A qualified chimney sweep will provide a report detailing their findings, including any recommendations for repair or additional inspections (like a Level 2 inspection), and provide cost estimates for any necessary work.
A Level 1 inspection is the most common type of chimney inspection, recommended for routine annual checks of chimneys that are in good condition and have not undergone any modifications. It involves a visual assessment of accessible components.
A Level 2 chimney inspection includes all Level 1 checks, plus a camera scan of the flue for concealed damage, examination of the chimney's exterior and interior (including concealed areas like the attic, basement, and crawl space), structural assessment from the crown to the chimney connector, and checks for proper clearances from combustibles. This deeper inspection is necessary after changes to the chimney or fuel type, after chimney fires or accidents, or when selling a home.
Level 3 inspection involves the removal or destruction of permanently attached portions of the chimney or building structure to access concealed areas and assess their condition.
